Mostly for the world building and the special effects and the characters. I thought the plot was ordinary and the fighting scenes interested me not at all.

A few things )

I had internet for about five minutes on Wednesday night. *sigh* Then my little Acer decided not to connect like it’s supposed to, and the internet settings icon like, totally froze. Luckily I had episodes of Castle to entertain me.

So I finally gave in. Yesterday I went and bought a new cord for the Toshiba – thinking that at least it was only $100 as opposed to the $227 the repair shop wanted to charge me. Except it didn’t fit. Clearly just taking the powercord into the shop and relying on the salesperson to give me the right one was just CRAZY. Dragonfly’s universal one does fit though, so back to the shop I go!

So, with no internet yet again last night, I watched Easy Virtue,** which had been recced to me. Now I’m FULL of fic ideas – I am totally going to volunteer to write it for Yuletide. Of course, I’ll be screwed challenged if I get it and the recipient asks for any of the minor characters. What I really want is… ”spoilers” )

*If Nathan Fillion is NOT a nice guy, DO NOT TELL ME. I like to know as little as possible about actors because it affects my enjoyment of their shows if I find out they’re horrible people.

**Holy crap!! Marion Whittaker was Jen in The IT Crowd!! I recognised her voice but otherwise she was TRANSFORMED.

Dragonfly's mum is staying the weekend. Tonight we had "movie night" and Bunny got to choose the movie (but everyone had to agree) After Tinkerbell was vetoed (we only watched it last week)and High School Musical was vetoed by Nanny (who wasn't interested in that sort of film) Bunny's third choice was Mamma Mia which none of the grown ups had seen, but Bunny has seen lots of times at her Dad's, apparently.

Mama Mia is WONDERFUL, omg.

Promo on youtube

I was going to post fabulous piccies that would make you all want to RUN out to see this film but LJ won't let me upload piccies tonight, and I'll lose interest in posting once the squee wears off. I will mention a 'Colin Firth in a wet see through shirt' scene which has FORCED me to get out my Pride and Prejudice dvd and there just went my early night....

On a personal note, my entire adult life, I never got how Meryl Streep is supposed to be so beautiful - until tonight. She is GORGEOUS in this film.

Bunny LOVES this film. She does not appear to notice or care about the grown up storyline or the mostly middle-aged actors singing Abba tunes, she is all about the tunes.

Bunny's sum up of the film:

It's just like High School Musical.

I am still psyching myself up to get stuck into my last big assignment, due 8am Monday*. Then I have two weeks to prep for exams. We all know how that's going to go, right?

I still have stuff to get out my system. I have answered emails, read my flist and now I have to talk about Hancock.

I almost randomly acquired this film, it having come and gone at the cinemas without me noticing. I have a vague recollection that people found it disappointing. It's not a perfect film by any means, but it does a lot of things damn well, and I loved it!!!!

Hee! I almost revised my Yuletide sign up AGAIN, but I checked and it already has 5 requests and 18 volunteers, so it's popular enough already. Yays!!!

*technically 5pm yesterday. Whatever

In the car afterwards...

Me - And could Christian Bale GET any hotter? I don't think so!
[livejournal.com profile] special_trille *pause* I could do without the assault charges...
Me *stares at her horrified*
Trille - You didn't know?
Me - NO OMG.
Trille - How could you not know?
Me - I have had my computer turned off for a week.
Trille ....
Me - Tell me.
Trille - I can't.
Me - Tell me.
Trille - It's bad.
Me - Girlfriend?
Trille - Worse.
Me - Kid?
Trille - Mother and sister.
Me *bands head on steering wheel repeatedly*
Trille - There's a possibility it was just verbal assault and all LIES, anyway.
Me *cries*

So, um, saw Dark Knight )

Meanwhile, Eric Roberts continues to be one of the hottest men on the planet. It's hard to believe he's 52. Yes, I am shallow.

My overwhelming reaction to Robert Downey Jnr dirty and sweaty and welding was I need this screencap for my desktop piccie!!!

I am so straight for him.

Iron Man is FUCKING AWESOME.

When did 'the bit at the end of the credits' start getting called the Easter Egg? That's new to me, not that I'm ever at the forefront of these things anyway. Someone shouted it out when the bit at the end of the credits started at the end of Iron Man tonight, and then I just saw it referred to in [livejournal.com profile] angriest's post.

[livejournal.com profile] yuletide is kicking my ass this year. I hate to think about how long it's taken me to write 1400 words, and I totally don't have any middle to my story at all.

Apparently, however I can write 700 word comment fic in an hour if someone tells me to, and if it's in one the most obscure fandoms ever, and oh yeah, writing's fun! I forgot that.

Anyone want to come over to my house and watch Let's Go to Prison?

From a review on AfterElton.com -

I would argue that Blades of Glory is one of the most relentlessly clever and keenly perceptive comedies ever made about straight-male bonding, fear of intimacy, and masculinity — and figure skating, naturally.

Watched a film I'd never heard of last night, Stranger Than Fiction, starring Will Ferrell, Emma Thompson, Maggie Gyllenhal, Dustin Hoffman and Queen Latifa.

Will Ferrell in a dramatic role - wait! Don't leave! It was lovely! Also, Emma Thompson is always awesome.

Eight Below

Stopped in Armadale for lunch on the way home from Slashcon, and somehow ended up going to see Eight Below, a film I'd never heard of, but Jody and Trille were keen to see, and hey, Paul Walker is pretty, right?

I should mention at this point that I am a sucker for dogs.

I spent a lot of the film crying, at one point actually sobbing loudly.

This site has a trailer, and some scenes, including 'introducing the dogs'.

EDIT - Massive spoilers in comments.

How much do I love War of the Worlds?

...anyone who badmouths it before the high wears off to my face gets bitchslapped.

Actually, not really. I just love the word 'bitchslap' and really don't have enough opportunities to use it.

However, War of the Worlds unbelievably good.

Annoying bit, sort of spoilerish )

And here's something I never thought I would say... Tom Cruise was brilliant.

Go see it. Really.

Edited to add

I originally typed in that the film was 'nearly perfect' but then I imagined the scorn that would be heaped on me and was afraid. But now I have Jody at my shoulder doing the 'this close' gesture with her thumb and forefinger and now that I have back up *is brave*

War of the Worlds is *nearly* perfect.

*holds head high*

*runs away and hides*

BATMAN BEGINS!!!

My god. I don't think Christian Bale can make a bad film - shut up about Reign of Fire, okay - it was brilliant until the Americans showed up. Fucking Matthew McConaughey.

Bestests comic adaptation *EVA*

*deliberating not thinking about the X Men films*

Random things to do with Batman Begins )

Also finally saw Troy today. Which made me think of Atlantis, naturally.

*flist blink*

Those outfits? Where the men are mostly naked but for their manly skirts that swirl around when they fight?

Sheppard and Ford would look dreamy in those.

"OH GOD SHOOT IT! SHOOT IT!"

That's me quoting me, not the film, since I said this a great many times while watching this for the first time tonight. I say, 'for the first time', because on returning to the menu at the end of the film, I discovered the clearly labelled Extended Version. And hit play, obviously.

This is a rockin' film. To sum up in two major points in no particular order of importance.

1. It has Aliens. And Predators. And they fight each other, quite a bit.

2. It has a black woman in the lead role. And she kicks ass in a reasonably credible manner given that she's, you know, a bit outclassed in terms of size, weight, number and sharpness of teeth and other pointy bits, and also has no guns.

**And on a purely personal note, it has that gorgeous black guy from the Bond films, (well for a while) who makes me melt.
sarren: (Default)
So really, this film's just all about the pretty, isn't it.

All the special effects, science fictiony plotline and fight scenes, they're just to showcase Vin, aren't they.

(Not that Vin, [livejournal.com profile] zebra363)

And because we've all been good little fangrrls, Karl Urban in seriously black eyeliner and a *guh* uniform.

Thandie Newton with the kohl, and the sexy.

And just for *me* Linus Roache. Peroxide. I may need some alone time now.

What do you mean, Linus who?

I nearly got Dragonfly to post something today!!! She was sitting in my computer chair doing nothing much and I said 'I'm going to hang out the washing and then going to the shops for food...and you have all these interesting anecdotes like how your credit card was hijacked and used in America, Bunny's new interesting facial scar, fluffing chickens...'

Much nagging in point of fact.

So then as I'm coming inside from hanging out the washing I thoughtlessly say, 'hey wanna come for a ride to the shops' not realising that Dragonfly was five whole lines into a post Then it was like watching the Road Runner in action, a blur of speed, a dust stir and there she was, waiting by the front door, keys in hand.

*shrug*

There are times when I watch a movie and don't react with extreme love (or, occasionally, hate). The Bourne Identity for example. Maybe I'd have liked it better if it had been Colin Firth or Hugh Grant or Christian Bale playing the lead...

...which brings me to 'Bridget Jones Edge of Reason'. Laughed, squirmed, laughed til I nearly fell off my seat and had to apologise to the lady sitting in front of me after the film. MASSIVE LOVE for Mark Darcy. HUGE. Also for Bridget. And Rebecca. And I would definitely have shagged Daniel Cleaver in Thailand. Hugh Grant played him fabulously, with a minimum of his trademark facial grimaces and a gorgeous deep tan showed of by white linen shirt....okay now I'm thinking about Colin Firth, in see-through white linen shirts, soaking wet...

Annyywway.

Also, 'Equilibrium'. Christian Bale film. And Christian Bale is pumped and martial-arty and the top ranking 'cleric' (law enforcers) and Sean Bean is his partner (for about 12 seconds) Also William Fichtner, who I have a thing for is a resistance leader. So I got this film for my birthday from Jody and looked at it, saw a scifi film that I'd never heard of and forgot all about it. Until Jody came over this week and made me watch it and OMG it ROCKS. It's dark.

Wow, the archery semi-finals certainly were gripping, weren't they?

::rereads::

::boggles::

Disappointing for Aus, obviously, but Tim's like, 17 years old, he's just starting - the Japanese bloke's what? 41? And this is like his millionth Olympic attempt and he looked just so goddam happy. So, go him, I hope he wins gold.

And here ends any attempt at Olympics commentary from me, I really hope.

Alfred Hitchcock's 'The Birds'. More than 40 years old, this film is justifiably a classic. It's scary! Though there was one scene that totally lost me, when the character does something not believable. I usually berate the TV if this happens.

Where I whinge about specific bits of the film )
