Wow, the archery semi-finals certainly were gripping, weren't they?

::boggles::
Disappointing for Aus, obviously, but Tim's like, 17 years old, he's just starting - the Japanese bloke's what? 41? And this is like his millionth Olympic attempt and he looked just so goddam happy. So, go him, I hope he wins gold.
And here ends any attempt at Olympics commentary from me, I really hope.
Alfred Hitchcock's 'The Birds'. More than 40 years old, this film is justifiably a classic. It's scary! Though there was one scene that totally lost me, when the character does something not believable. I usually berate the TV if this happens.
So, they're barricaded in, there's a lull and everyone except Tippi has dozed off. Tippi hears scary noises and decides to investigate by herself. I'm not criticising this bit, it's 1963, she hasn't seen enough scary movies to know better...She goes upstairs...the suspicious noises are coming from behind a closed door....slowly she opens it (inward) and shines the torch around, taking a step forward. There's a gaping hole in the roof!! OH NO!! She sees birds!!! They fly at her!!! Does she step back, slamming the door? No. She steps FORWARD, clears the door, and CLOSES THE DOOR BEHIND HER While I'm railing at the TV, there's a prolonged attack during which she scrabbles at the door handle but is unable to get her act together to actually turn it, or even turn her body toward the door away from the attack.
Also there was one scene that I thought dated the film and that was a scene where a middle-aged woman in a diner where people are huddled, says to Tippi "This all started when you came, you're the cause! You're EVIL!" So I'm thinking, would that happen in 2004? Would a stranger to a small town be blamed for bad stuff happening, on the grounds that they must be EVIL?

Archery? Mmmmm ....
Date: 2004-08-20 10:30 am (UTC)Have you ever read the short story of The Birds by Daphne Du Maurier? It's wonderful - set on a remote Scottish island if I remember rightly. Many years ago my students VOLUNTARILY stayed five minutes after class one lunch time so we could finish reading it aloud.
