[livejournal.com profile] zebra363 and I sat on the floor playing with magnetic molecule-creating toys, me because Zebra told me to, and Zebra because everybody else had had a go and she is competitive felt left out. Behind us the conversation ebbed and swelled. Some random word caught my attention.

Me - Well, I've just gone to a happy Atlantis place.
Zebra - Made me wonder if there's new Mag 7 photomanips up...

Hell if I can remember what triggered that.

Trille has a brand new Mac. It's so pretty. Even the pc people were fondling lasciviously. And of course, since it was there and it was on, people had to check their lj's. Which is how I found out that [livejournal.com profile] astolat had just posted a new fic. The story was open on the desktop. I caught a glimpse of leather restraints.

I exercised heroic self-control.
sarren: (Default)
[livejournal.com profile] vegetariansushi is a bad, bad girl. It is completely her fault that I'm eating a peanut butte/m&m/chocolate bar right now.

They have peanut butter m&m's over there.

*pauses to marvel*

I'm afraid the rest of the candy didn't do much for me. Luckily [livejournal.com profile] zebra363 was on hand to save the day.

Me - Hmm, Butterfingers?
Zebra - Best candy, eva!
Me *bite* Revoltingly sweet. *holds out*
Zebra. *snatches and scoffs* (muffled) Clearly, you are mad!

Me - Another peanut butter candy? In a cup.
Zebra - Not quite up to the standard of Butterfingers which should be required eating.
Me *bite* Also waay too sweet. *holds out*
Zebra *consumes*

Me Peanut butter m&m's? Sensing a theme here. *bites*
Zebra *holds out hand*
Me Get away from me before I keeell you.

[ Later, only mildly nauseus ]

Me - Saw Hellboy yesterday. Must now sample Baby Ruth. *takes bite* Nope, too sweet. What a surprise. *hands on to next person*

Also to the person who promised to send me slash when they heard I was about to watch Hellboy. Thankyou, but no thankyou. Clearly, it's all about the het.

So I organise this viewing for Friday since an incredible amount of us managed to fail to tape the pilot while we were at Swancon. Call ourselves fans? Pshaw!

So [livejournal.com profile] zebra363 of course, being organised and also liking food very much says "What are we going to do about food?" to which I replied "omgI'mworkingalldayI'mnotcookingwe'llgetpizza" which is actually my pretty standard response.

However a couple of people have stepped up to the plate, as it were. (Look! A sporting reference!)

[livejournal.com profile] emma_in_oz and [livejournal.com profile] special_trille are bringing pies.
[livejournal.com profile] zebra363 is bringing a vegetable plate prepared by her most excellent mother. Possibly homemade cookies if she has time.

Anybody else (not [livejournal.com profile] ascetic_hedony), feel an urge to bring anything, feel free. It is not required, and also some people will be racing from work to get here by 6pm.

[livejournal.com profile] psycho_tabby did mention something about potatoes. But it was all very confusing.

I find being with someone who's in the initial phase of a new obsession to be a lot of fun, especially if it's a fandom I love too.

So[livejournal.com profile] zebra363 comes over. We watch an episode of Mag 7, interspersed with much enthusiasic conversation mostly, as I remember involving Zebra going, 'Vin is teh hot!' and 'Chris is very handsome too! Who is this Michael Biehn guy? Their love is so true!' And me going 'Yes, yes, but EZRA! Look at Ezra! Let me explain in great detail why Ezra is to be worshipped!

After a break to watch the new Battlestar Galactica (obviously) Zebra is like, 'show me more Vin!' Okaay. So I put in a new tape. First up is a great group bonding episode, and is greatly enjoyed, along with much more enthusiastic chat, and is followed by the episode that Zebra has heard Is So Slashy and All About Vin. Unwarily I make some innocuous comment

Zebra - SHUT UP I CAN"T HEAR OMG!! 111!!DIE!!
Me - *hides*

The Mag 7 fandom is, you could say, unusual. From what I can tell you've got a whole bunch of fanfic writers (not limited to slashers) who've gone 'OMG all these gorgeous sexy men, must write fics but I can't be arsed to research the time period so I'm just gonna make them SWAT guys'.

There's whole archives out there of Mag 7 'ATF' fics. Zebra was telling me one archive she was recced to only 33 out of more than 200 fics were set within canon. Which led to a whole discussion, ie us agreeing that neither of us much care for AU's, we'd both given one of these ATF fics a go, both had chosen Magyra's on the basis that she's one of the Highlander BNF, and both had been largely indifferent to it because fundamently these are not the characters we know and love, not raised with the beliefs of the day or governed by the customs and law. Plus there's no horses.

And talking about AU's, I'm mostly reading Due South at the moment, mainly cos [livejournal.com profile] makesmewannadie is mostly reccing DS at the moment, and the fic I'm reading is an AU. Zebra says she gave it a go but gave up cos it's too long, and you know, an AU and therefore not the characters but in this case I have to disagree. This fic has Fraser and RayK as pro ice hockey players and it's hooked me in despite my intense dislike of bloodsports because not only are the characterisations spot on, but they are in familiar context, Fraser does play ice hockey, and RayK likes to hit people. Oh just read it.

In summary [livejournal.com profile] zebra363 is too cute :)

In other news - tonight [livejournal.com profile] zebra363 begged me to tie her up and force her to do stuff.

You can smell the fires from here. Anyone heard from [livejournal.com profile] zebra363 recently?

I realised yesterday that I couldn't remember the last time I read a Harry Potter fic, or even vaguely what it was about. So then I indulged in that brief mourning period you go through when you realise that that all consuming love for a particular fandom you had has finally gone, and while you will still continue to read and enjoy in that fandom, it will never be quite the same. And then I realised I couldn't rememeber the last time I read a fic at all. Even the ones recced by my flist with links provided!

I'm not worried though, it's not like this is the first time this has happened. It's just like riding a horse, or whatever, you know, not thinking about it too much in case performance anxiety sets in…

I have, however, managed to watch 30 episodes of 'The Champions' in the space of three weeks and am full of massive love for Craig/Richard/Sharron. I am willing to indoctrinate show anyone who's interested. *looks eager*

Have now moved on to 'The Persuaders' which was a bit of wrench, but I was soon reconciled after I was reminded just how CUTE and SLASHY Roger Moore and Tony Curtis are together. As in, walking around arm in arm all the time and calling each other 'my dear'. As in, one time they actually lie on opposite ends of the same couch with arms propped over each other's legs and drinking champagne....

Have also managed to fit in quite a lot of Work, some Entertaining, and am reading a BOOK. Also, scheduling dentist's appointments and REFRAINING FROM DRINKING MUDSLIDES cos of stupid antibiotics.
sarren: (Default)
[livejournal.com profile] psycho_tabby had her 21st birthday party on New Year's Eve. There was chocolate cake. Also prawns on sticks, a multitude of spiders lurking in a suspicious manner over our heads (I was worried it was going to turn into a scene from Harry Potter) and there was Dee! Home from Canada! And 21. And my friends were there. And Dee's nice family. And sparklers! I had much fun :)

And then there was the inevitable discussion about the updated death toll and how countries should be donating more...

And look! They are. And maybe it is a bit of a pissing contest, as the article says, but I have to think that it's because the scale of the tragedy just keeps escalating. The newspaper this morning proclaimed "127 000 dead, that number to double."

On that discussion and Zebra's post... )

After the crushing disappointment of our own election all my/our hopes were pinned on that other one. Obsessively monitoring it via the trusty internet....right up until 1am Sunday morning when I broke my phone cord. And then I had NO INTERNET ACCESS FOR 3 DAYS. Cos Sunday was spent in the bush pushing down trees and then stupid Work for the next two days. So late Tuesday afternoon I finally get around to ringing a friend

Me. OMG I broke my phone cord!! Do I have to drive all the way to a Mac shop or will any computer shop do.
[livejournal.com profile] silver_b_a *slowly and disbelievingly* The cord that runs from your computer to the phone?
Me Yes, yes.
[livejournal.com profile] silver_b_a *much laughter*
[livejournal.com profile] silver_b_a It's a basic phone cord you moron. Go to Kmart right now.
Me La la... I'm not embarassed at all.
[livejournal.com profile] silver_b_a Wait til I remind you about the time you couldn't get your new printer cartridge to work so I had to come along and take off the plastic tag.
Me I'm hanging up on you now.

Have cut my vague rambling about election stuff for those who have violent urges towards people *still* going on about it. )

And talking about filthy perverts.... )

But then Sunday was spent engaged in surprisingly satisfying physical labour which [livejournal.com profile] zebra363 's already described . But my personal quote of the day came after watching Dragonfly disappear into the long grass after a madly fleeing Bunny. Just hearing an enraged scream "YOU MADE ME RUN INTO A SPIDER'S WEB!!!.....ALSO. RUNNING AWAY IS BAD."

My 'green not greed' t-shirt is nifty.

It conveys to the worid that I'm a 'barmy leftie' (as [livejournal.com profile] special_trille likes to describe us)
Also, it is very tiny and very green.

These are all good things, thus I decided to wear it on Saturday. So we go to vote, which as things never run smoothly in Sarren-land, it turns out that you can't wear advertise a political party within a certain radius of the voting booths. Apparently in case you cause people to change their political opinions in the time it takes them to queue and vote. What the?

So I ended up making more of a statement than I'd originally intended. The Greens pamphlet guy offered me a shirt from his car, but I went with the more fun option and flipped the t-shirt up so the slogan was covered. I mentioned it was really tight, right? Got quite a bit of attention while waiting in the queue.

Finally it's my turn.

Official - Name?
Me *gives full name*
Official *looking, looking*
Me *puts finger on name* There
Official - Address?
Me *gives address* I'm reading it right off the page. I'm actually totally somebody else.
Official - Is this the first time you've voted today?
Me - Yes. Unless you count the five other electorates I've already been around today.
Official - You'd need to go around more than five if you're voting Green.
Me *sob*

Also, I had a lovely birthday weekend, if you don't count the part where my country betrayed me. We had a party for ME on Sunday, which admittedly involved the first couple of hours being spent with all of us depressed and rehashing the election travesty, but after the sugar kicked in (other people get drunk, fans get sugar highs) we cheered up (though [livejournal.com profile] emma_in_oz was probably faking it for my sake) and people paid attention to me, and the world was good. Well, for me.

Big thank-yous to everyone who made my day lovely by washing-up, child-minding, tea-making or mostly importantly, paying attention to me. I love you all lots.

And then we watched one of my prezzies, Y Tu Mama Tambien , which rocked, and then everyone went home except [livejournal.com profile] zebra363 who sinks ever deeper into the bottomless pit of fandom, and has newly discovered the guilty pleasure of rewatching the 'good bits'. Over and over.

I love my friends.
sarren: (Default)
Since I STILL can't rec or code ANYTHING i'm going to dribble on instead. So in the newspaper today I see Latham is courting the 'sought after nerd vote' by comparing himself to Luke Skywalker and using other SW references. Hear that? Our vote is 'sought after' Who knew? Oh, except for the women nerds probably.

So I've been bumbling** about around ljs and links even more than usual. I found a community called Making Fun of Stupid People, which kept me amused for about 6.5 minutes, found out all about all the controvertial changes George Lucas has made to the original SW trilogy for the dvd release. (Gunguns!!! I want to cry) found Peter David's blog. Was reassured his political views are the right ones (ie match mine) Mind you, I tend to assume all us nerds think the same way, which is probably a tad naive.

And Michael Moore's letter to Bush 'It Takes Real Courage to Desert Your Post and Then Attack a Wounded Vet' among others

Go read the 17/9 lj entry by koaloha, who tired of fundamentalists in her face on the subway fought back with showtunes. When I stumbled over this I had just accidently watched an episode of SVU (which I generally avoid at all costs as sexual violence/violence against women upsets me. It's too close to home). But I was talking to Dragonfly, and Keller (whoever) is so pretty, and the next thing women were being raped on subway trains while other commuters did nothing. So reading the lj entry gave me a less traumatic perspective on riding the subway.

TPM is one fandom I've never got into, mostly due to my intense dislike of the latest films. But then fearlessdiva goes around around reccing TPM PleasureSlave!Porn fics. Who can resist that?

Also a hell of a lot of people seem to have suddenly gone 'Right, it is now my mission in life to put together a comprehensive list, complete with links of all the best Harry/Draco, or Harry/Snape, or even, hey, every pairing I can think of'. These people are my new best friends.

And I created my dmoc community and then did nothing constructive with it like, for example contacting the only other person I know of who likes it enough to write it, or putting anything in it myself. But I feel like I've done something constructive and that's what matters. *beams* Though I did lure Zebra over on the premise of rewatching Get Real and then forced her to watch DMOC. She was kind enough not to say anything abusive to me afterwards. And she's starting to appreciate Get Real. So I feel it was a win overall.

There was other stuff to but that's probably enough linkless recs for now. And also? Why am I typing this with freaking page formatting overlaid? (ie 'Screen Comments' etc) LJ really doesn't like me right now. *sulk*

**odd word choice but I've decided I like it.

Lured [livejournal.com profile] zebra363 over with the promise of Highlander songvids and then forced her to watch three episodes of 'Coupling'. Not a total success, unfortunately, verdict seems to be 'Funny, but the people are unlikeable'. While I was still reeling from that, she added "I especially can't stand the vain one'. Otherwise known as Sally, otherwise known as MY FAVOURITE (my current icon, even)

Meanwhile, 3rd season is on it's way to me via Amazon. Go me.

And I've been reading a bit of Firefly....

Practical jokes. Simon. Jayne. Hotness.

River. Simon. Overtones.

Jayne's been zombified. Gen.

Quite good Simon/Jayne, mostly from Mal's pov.

So if [livejournal.com profile] zebra363 ever gets tired of doing arcane things to horses' feet and fancies a career change I'm thinking indoor house painting might be the way to go. The colour scheme is fab and the quality of the work very professional looking and she did it ALL HERSELF. I did volunteer to help at the time but Zebra may have taken the unenthusiastic tone of voice to mean that I didn't want to help. I can't imagine why she'd assume that....

Meanwhile Zebra had cooked up a storm, so much so that even arriving two and a half hours late as I did, there was still much yummy stuff left for me.

Was surprised to find myself dragged off to engage in physical activity immediately after by Emma, of all people. Cos she has this petanque set (apparently called Bull by plebs) I get to call it by a spiffy foreign name having been introduced to it first in Mauritius. I got all excited when I first saw the box with the balls in - I thought we were up for a rousing game of Quidditch. Alas. But much fun was had anyway.

Emma did manage to injure herself slightly throwing the ball. But since she had earlier managed to fall off her chair (I missed that, disappointingly) I'm just glad we ended the game when we did.

Then Zebra gave me the grand tour of the property that I'd also missed out on before, at an exhilarating pace that didn't allow for me to watch my step as carefully as I really would have wished. My sneakers may never be the same.

mourns

The horses are as cute as ever, and looking well in their new home. Must take Zebra up on her offer to ride one soon...

Trip home in the dark was challenging. Managed to nearly take out an animal just short of the township. I thought it was a fox by the colouring, but on second thought I maybe it was too big. [livejournal.com profile] cricketk?[livejournal.com profile] special_trille? You were just behind me, did you see what it was?

After 15 minutes of obeying the speedlimit, maybe a bit slower on the curves, and when passing roadtrains, was overtaken by [livejournal.com profile] cricketk which, while it deprived me of my 'Lost Highway' sensation I always get when speeding into pitch darkness, did make the trip more relaxing for me, as it's much easier to follow another car, even when the driver of the other car apparently regards speed limits as guidelines, rather than rules...

20k's over, Cricket?

shakes head Shocked, I tell you.

Anyway, I had a really fun time, thanks for having us over, Zebra!

I've had an extra cool week, even though I didn't get to the Fellowship Commentry due to extreme exhaustion from gardening all that afternoon. And while it's true I loathe and detest gardening in all it's forms, there is this glow of satisfaction from a job well done to offset the sore fingertips and strange insect bite Very Nearly in a Scary Area. Really counting my blessings here. Should be noted: glow of satisfaction only achieveable when 1. Results are blindingly obvious and 2. Other people there sharing the work, even if you do only talk at each other about hp fics (thanks silver_b_a)

Speaking of silver_b_a, I was under the impression that she comes over and helps us do worky things from the goodness of her heart. Discovered the other day that when she buys her own house and has a garden to maintain, she'll be looking to us to return the favour. Poor misguided fool. (Did I say that out loud?)

Obviously my extra cool week was not all about the gardening. On the Tuesday I finally got to Bodyjam again.

side note sarren's "week" begins on a Tuesday, as her stupd work week goes from Tues to Mon, hence always working the Monday nights - end of week paperwork.

EXCEPT TODAY happy dance

I should be at work - but I'm not!!!!

David Bowie bounce )

Also good this week, getting hold of some 3rd season eps of Enterprise. Can't wait to show them to mr_booboo. Luckily I won't have to wait long, as she's planning on coming over to my house before the concert so she can watch some! In the teeth of Trille's laughter and derision.

Showed some to silver_b_a as a reward for the garden effort, and to make up for traumatising her son, HA HA yet another person addicted!!! Previously 'mildly interested' the dark tone of 3rd season is really hitting somebody's buttons…

Me, I mean me!!!

Angriest Video Store Clerk Adventure )

Finally getting back on topic, got to my Bodyjam class for the first time in a month, only to discover they'd changed all the dance moves. Stumbled through first two routines, feeling lost and alone…

And then the jive number came on Knew I liked jive a lot. Now I'm in love. Should have seen me, I was just like Billy Elliot when he danced on the rooftop.

New mission, to find place to jive.

Surfaces - takes deep breath, looks around

Initial obsessive phase of new obsession finally worn off…

Jodes, earlier tonight "That's what I love about you, Sarren. From one obsession to another."

That's because I mentioned I was finally going to watch the 7th season Buffy tapes she brought around, oh, a couple of weeks ago, this because I caught a few seconds of sexy sexy Faith on Foxtel and realised there was half a season I hadn't seen yet.

buffyverse rambling )

And now, of course, back to 'Enterprise'.

My sneaky, subtle, diabolical plot to convert all my friends proceeds according to plan. Only tonight mr booboo confessed that SHE"S INTO THE FANDOM. I'm ignoring the fact that she looked really embarrassed as she said the words. The fact that she keeps dropping by to exchange tapes speaks for itself. Cos, you know, she lives so close…

K ran off with season one after I sat on her and talked obsessively at her until she caved (oh wait, no, that was my strategy with mr booboo and silver_b_a) K actually expressed interest at the outset, which saved both time and her being squashed. I only had time to show her three eps before other people arrived for 'Get Real' and socialising was forced upon us.

Zebra's only seen one or two, but I don't forsee her putting up any resistance. I cite Due South to back up my claim.

Silver_b_a, having been forced to endure repeated exposure has cracked, and expressed interest in fic recs.

Sarren does victory dance and falls over the wolf wannabee

http://www.angelfire.com/trek/gigislash/ Also writes Smallville, Firefly, and Stargate, though obviously I haven't got around to reading the other fandoms yet.

http://www.geocities.com/kylielee1000/index.html Also Stargate and Firefly.
