Option 5 where I try to buy rechargables as often as possible to avoid having to dispose of batteries correctly.

Yeah, but even they run out eventually.

(rechargeables hate me, but I'm going to try harder now)

our local school has a battery recycling program - I just have to remember to give them to kid B to take in, and the problem becomes someone elses (and I use rechargeables as much as possible)

Yeah, not my school. I've given Dragonfly the booklet (to take to Bunny's school) that I picked up at the Waste Management Expo about how schools can get involved in sustainability .

I'm pretty sure that our school is a fair way along the curve where sustainability is concerned - there are a couple of teachers who are very very committed, and the whole school has got behind it. There is a permaculture garden, battery and cork recycling, and various other programs as well. The kids do 'technology' projects that have to only use recycled materials, things like that. And there is some kind of water saving program that they are involved with as well.

mind you, when we tried to get a walking school bus program going, the p&c stonewalled us, so not as good as it could be (I got so pissed with various things that the p&c did that I withdrew, and only work on the subcommittees these days)

Sounds pretty awesome, yay for committed teachers.

Why did the p&c stonewall it?

My answer wasn't quite true. I know they are bad but don't know where to dispose of them, so they just seem to accumulate in my draw, kind of like the growing pile of lonely socks that come out of the washing machine.

Libraries!!!! Libraries have drop in boxes for them. WHO KNEW???

There should be better and more intense advertising campaigns directed at stuff like this.

Which libraries have these bins? I have a vague memory from childhood of Captain Planet giving me a "batteries are bad" message but nobody has ever been able to actually tell me what to do about this. I have asked a few people and they mostly blink and look puzzled.

Well, I can only speak for the City of Stirling (http://www.stirling.wa.gov.au/home/services/Recycling+and+Rubbish/School+Battery+Retrieval+Program.htm#Additional%20Battery%20Recycling). No doubt your council has a similar site.

Have done the poll.

This is so totally OT, but ... I have been to Yuletide's FAQs and Fandom Master List. No Lewis and, shock horror, no Sherlock Holmes. Am I blind or nobody wants to write in these fandoms? Am I too late to nominate them?

Okay, firstly, *breathe*. Second, join, or at least watch [livejournal.com profile] yuletide_admin and [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. This will tell you when stuff is happening. Right now we haven't had nominations, we're still throwing out ideas. HERE (http://community.livejournal.com/yuletide/574185.html) is a place where everyone is throwing out ideas and/or declaring what they're going to be nominating. You can nominate up to six. I am on page 5. I looked through the ones that came before (and now the ones since) and have seen a couple of fandoms that I'd like that have been mentioned a few times, so I feel pretty safe leaving it up to someone else to nominate.

The other good thing about this is (although once all the nominated fandoms go up you do this too) that I just saw someone nominate a film I haven't seen in like, ten years, but I loved it and I always thought there'd be a story there. I'd be willing to watch it again and write it, so I will add it to my list of fandoms I'd be willing to write.

Someone has just suggested Bronski und Bernstein btw!!!! Yays!!! And I saw Sherlock Holmes suggested. You'll just have to jump on in and throw Lewis into the pot.

I don't know why, but I want a "Some are worse than others" choice. It doesn't change much though because none of them should go in landfill. Non-rechargeable ones are relatively bad partly because of the sheer number of them per amount of power. Ni-Cad ones are relatively bad because of the cadmium. NiMH ones, I get the general impression, aren't quite so bad, so I'm planning to not feel to guilty about using them.

So, the NiMH ones - does it say that on the packaging?

No, I don't remember any mention of their lower nastiness on the packaging. It would be a bit of a marketing challenge to make much of it I expect. "NiMH batteries, not as environmentally unfriendly as the others" doesn't really cut it. I tried googling for toxic NiMH and the top 2 hits were:

Hmm, will remember to check next time I need batteries.

Meanwhile my cordless mouse is not bringing me as much joy now I know it's TOXIC.

I've never been too keen on cordless mice myself. I use the mouseless mouse that is built into my laptop. The cordless mouse that we had for our family desktop computer seemed to cause a fair bit of grief by not working just when people most wanted it to work (like shoelaces).
