I've read several Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy fics in a row where the guys pull out condoms and lube and it's jolted me right out of the action each time.

Condom use by gay men in the 1970s? Y/N?

Also, what is the likelihood of having official "lube" around?

Also, I just got to the end of a fic that I had (apart from the condom use) really quite enjoyed, to find this author's note: Seriously, I've read and re-read this so many times I'm actually, physically sick of it. If it still doesn't quite work, then I'll just have to admit defeat XD I guess your fics are a bit like your children: sometimes you love them, sometimes you can't stand them, and sometimes you wish they were never born

And it kinda put me off. I mean, if YOU don't like your fic, why should I?

Oh, this is fantastic, just a set of three short stories about Xavier recruiting the Misfits to the cause. (you don't have to have seen season 3, this is set when Nathan was around)

This is the day that could save the world or destroy it. Charles walks through the cabin of the aircraft, making sure that everyone is there and wearing their suits. Erik: present. Raven: present. Hank, Moira, Kelly, Alisha, Simon: present. Nathan: clearly hungover (Charles hadn’t actually told them not to drink the night before, granted, but he’d rather thought it went without saying) but present. Curtis – Curtis?

“Curtis?” Charles asks. “Forgive me, but you’re not looking terribly well.”

Curtis is holding onto the side of the cabin as if it’s the only thing keeping him upright. When Charles peers into his mind, it’s too tired and jumbled to make any sense of.

“Curtis?”

“This time,” Curtis mumbles, the words blurring into each other, “we’re gonna get it right.”

Normally NOT a fan of vampire AU 'verses, but this is fantastic. John is a human slave, the vampires are the ruling class. There's a plot involving the HLF (the Human Liberation Front).

A Priori 'Verse by rubberbutton (26000 words)

“So, what can you tell me?” Lestrade asks. He's got his hands tucked into the pockets of his trench coat and he toes a charred bit of furniture.

John likes Lestrade. He's is the most laid-back vampire John has ever met, and he treats John like he hasn't even noticed he's human – which, despite what Sherlock may say about his detective skills, John is reasonably sure he has.

NB: there's quite a lot of typos in the final part, which boggles my mind. Has no-one mentioned it to the author, is the culture of 'only compliments' on comments become so widespread, or does the author not care. I've PM'd her anyway *shrug*

Also, in case there's anyone yet who hasn't heard, the new Sherlock episode is AWESOME. They have outdone themselves!!!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR.

We spent New Year's Eve with Dragonfly's family. We played boardgames and watched movies, specifically Skyline and RED. I'd been really looking forward to Skyline, ended up very disappointed. Didn't know anything about RED, except that it was an action film with Bruce Willis. I'm not a fan of serious action films. Luckily this wasn't one of them. Also, most all star cast EVER.

Do you need any more incentive than Helen Mirren with a machine gun, really?

Unusual (for me) fic rec: Patrick Jane/Grace Ven Pelt. This a pwp, but it's about personal boundaries. You don't really need to have seen the show - the writer is good enough to convey everything you need to know about the characters. It's lovely.

Hmm, I haven't read a Merlin fic in AGES, and I don't think I've gotten around to watching past about episode 5 of the new season.

But then I had this fic recced to me and I remember how much I like these characters.

Summary: Regency AU in which Arthur is the darling of the ton, Merlin is still a terrible valet, Mordred is a radical rabble-rouser, and Gwen's in love with a Light Dragoon

Okay, stick a fork in me, I think I'm done *g*

I'd have to say my TOP THREE Yuletide experiences have been.

1. Receiving a lovely Gift that the author went the extra mile to tailor to what I asked for - a great Blood Ties case fic, Liberation, and yay, moving towards a threesome in a believable way! Not to mention the possibility of a sequel. I totally SCORED.

2. The Remember the Titans fic, Sunny Days, - Awesome fic, and exactly what I've been craving since the first dozen times I saw that film. I think it was one of my requests my first year doing Yuletide.

3. The EPIC Casablanca fic recced below. There are actually two awesome Rick/Sam fics, that I suspect may have been written by the same author. One is 2k and I would have been satisfied with how great that was, but then I read Sentimental Reasons and was BLOWN AWAY. I'm not even a big fan of the movie, I've only ever seen it the once. For me, the stand out fic for Yuletide.

Firstly, the Blood Ties fic I received is FABULOUS. When I first got my notification email with the summary, all I did for the first 10 minutes was SAVOUR the fact that my author had taken on board all my incoherent rambling about what I liked about the fandom and the sort of story I like AND WROTE EXACTLY WHAT I ASKED FOR. Which to me implies that not only did they go the extra mile to make sure I got a fic I love, but that they enjoyed the challenge and had fun writing it. I really hope so, anyway.

Liberation Vicki/Henry/Mike - AWESOME case fic. G rated, even if you're not into threesomes, or slash I still recommend you read it for the great CASE.

An actual Lewis/Hathaway vid that captures *something* of their relationship. Why can't someone make a vid that just shows all the ways Hathaway watches Lewis all the time and the way they look at each other out of the corner of their eyes when someone says something they think is funny and their non-existent personal space and how neither of them date but go to parties together and hang out at Lewis's place and only take up half the couch and Hathaway says half jokingly 'thank god we've got each other' Ahem, what was I saying?

Flesh & Blood Dance by Lillithilian.
I've just finished this. Original Merlin characters mixing it up with the cast of the series. Various pairings, including RPS. I refused to read it until RH peer pressured me and assured me that it was so AU that the actors aren't really themselves. And she was totally right. This fic is freakin' AMAZING. It also comes with artwork and a vid by Mamoru!!!! which I can't actually watch because I only have a little netbook which doesn't like the program they use on that site.
