How anyone could practically destroy something that didn't belong to them is just beyond me. And handing it back in that condition, with that explanation, but no apology or offer to replace it, is really, really crappy. I'd be pissed. And I'm sure if you'd had any inkling something like this would happen, you would've made a point of going back to the friend's place and retrieving it ASAP. But, you know, friends don't do thoughtless things like that, or they're not supposed to!
