The friend who did this is an asshole. Maybe you should have called them and asked them to put it in a safe place till you could go pick it up; but, on the other hand, they shouldn't have been passing around a book that clearly didn't belong to them without checking with you first ...
Somewhere in between the last two? I swapped half a dozen times before choosing No:3. I would be miffed, but not ropeable. But certainly not thinking it was my own fault for not picking it up and thinking it is quite rude to pass somebody else book around without their permission (though secretly proud of the proof that I have good taste in books).
Would certainly not be happy, but in the long run would choose a person over a book, would not want to loose a friend over it. It can be replaced.
I would love to say that I'd be happy everyone got some kind of joy out of reading it, but I know I'm much too particular about the condition of my books and the utter lack of respect the person paid to my possession to not be at least a little miffed.
How anyone could practically destroy something that didn't belong to them is just beyond me. And handing it back in that condition, with that explanation, but no apology or offer to replace it, is really, really crappy. I'd be pissed. And I'm sure if you'd had any inkling something like this would happen, you would've made a point of going back to the friend's place and retrieving it ASAP. But, you know, friends don't do thoughtless things like that, or they're not supposed to!
As much as I embrace the concept of material items not really mattering...
I view books as precious things that should be handled with respect and care (unless it was the Five People You Will Meet In Heaven, which deserves to be flung across the room on a regular basis.) When I have borrowed other people's books I take the greatest care to return them in the same condition I received them.
Your friend failed to show you, or the book, any kind of respect, and also should have had the common courtesy of asking you if you would mind sharing your book.
So yeah, I'd be pretty damned annoyed if this happened to me. (And it has. I've also had books never returned, or "lost". It gets expensive after a while!!)
It's one thing to loan a book out and it accidentally gets damaged. You whimper, get a little upset, buy another one and never loan your friend any books ever again. It's another thing all together when your friend loans it to other people who reckless DOGEARS your book! I don't care *how* long you've left your book at your friend's place, it's not theirs so they should put it away.
