1 These rates I'm being quoted, they're per room, right? Not per person, like in Oz?

2. Any recs for hotels in Orlando? And how far out is Kissimee, anyhow?

3. Recs for hotels in Washington?

Per room, yes, though there is sometimes a surcharge (usually about $10/person) for having more than one (or two) people in a room.

Kissimmee is an excellent location if you're going to Disney World. It's also close to a lot of other stuff, ie restaurants, etc. You will drive and drive while in Orlando no matter where you stay, so you might as well go for the decent rate. Residence Inn, Hampton Inn, Red Roof, Sleep Inn, all are good. It's sometimes worth paying a little more to have breakfast included because it can be expensive to go anywhere but McDonald's and I love the convenience of not leaving the hotel to eat.

Quotes should be per room, with a possible surcharge for extras. Most rooms will have two beds -- either doubles or queens -- or a king and you can ask for a rollaway.

We stayed at this Days Inn in Kissimmee:

For night time entertainment, Pleasure Island was good cheesy fun:

We stayed somewhere in Springfield when we went to Washington - not recommended because it was miles from anything.

Sometimes the rate quoted doesn't include tax - you may have to pay more than the quoted price.

I'd usually suggest using priceline.com. (Quite possible to get excellent places for very little money, and all paid up front so you know exactly what you're paying.) ... but it's probably too close to the time to mess about with their bidding system. Hotwire.com can be a good standby.

Just like Australia, everything in the US is per room, with extra cost if it's >2 people. As [livejournal.com profile] doctor_k_ said, watch out for taxes. The US norm is to quote prices before local/state taxes. You're usually looking at 12-20% extra but, as those taxes differ by state/county/city, it's hard to tell unless the site provides proper totals.
