I just read that the government have passed legislation that closes the rolls for new voters at 8pm on the very night the election is officially called.
This can't be true, right? I mean, we're not America.
It is so scary, isn't it? Guess the Libs think the young voters will head to Labour.
Below is some of the email I got from the GetUp site, which I would recommend joining if you are interested in politics or just how you live your life (if politics is a nasty word):
The Federal Government has passed extraordinary legislation that will close the rolls for voters at 8pm, on the very night the election is officially called. In the last election, 83,000 first-time voters enrolled in the first week after the election was called. Hundreds of thousands more registered at their new address. But this time they won't get that chance - unless we act urgently.
That's why whether you're enroled to vote or not, there's a crucial role for you to play right now. Click on the link below to demand this law be revoked, and help friends and family enrol correctly in the next two weeks - before new changes and extra red tape come into effect on April 16 making it even harder!
[I can't work out how to do a direct link here - hopefully will be able to do so in a few weeks - but copying and pasting should get you there.]
They also added: PS: On April 16, new ID requirements and extra red tape come into effect, so if you're in a rural area or overseas especially, make sure you get on the roll now.
If you don't want to use any code at all, LJ is clever enough to recognise you trying to give a link and will do it for you, but it needs the bit before the bit. If you paste a link into Internet Explorer or Firefox without the http:// bit, IE or Firefox assumes you meant http:// and puts it in for you but LJ comments isn't quite that bright.
If I paste: www.getup.org.au/campaign/DontLetThemStopYouFromVoting - I get text If I paste: http://www.getup.org.au/campaign/DontLetThemStopYouFromVoting - I get a link
If you want to use HTLM tags, which have the advantage of being prettier and giving more information, it works like this: The red bits are the code you have to use (the 'tag'), the blue bits are where you paste or type stuff (the content).
