I believe the technical term for this is 'percussive maintenance'.

Not sure if it'll do the iPod any good, unless there's something stuck or loose inside it, in which case it'll either loosen it free, or break it off.

I think it might make you feel better about it though.

If you're going to bang it hard on something, make that something you're nearest geek. You should probably mutter something along the lines of the banging will stop when there is an offer of "fixing".
