Fandomy stuff

sarrenMissed last Friday night’s check in – was watching Black Sails. Kid was out Friday and Saturday nights, so we got a bunch of eps in. Snuck in another couple when she was safely out of the way the last few days (showering etc), then pushed our luck too far last night. Her boyfriend was over (V Day) and they were hanging out in the next room with the doors shut, so I started a new ep, which promptly opened with a naked threesome going at it, and even as I was reaching for the remote to turn off the dvd (with the dodgy battery), Bunny burst into the room. I sort of yelped and hit the TV’s power off button. I know, I know, there are worse things on heaven and earth. *cough* Yes I let her watch Hannibal. *sigh*
BLACK SAILS. People have been pimping this at me madly for weeks, but I couldn’t start watching it while I was writing my exchange fics (if I get obsessed I can’t brain other fandoms)
I remember watching the first two eps when the show started and not particularly liking the characters but thinking it had promise, but Crossbones was also showing at the time and I had a lot on so I picked one pirate show and I don’t regret Crossbones, Crossbones was awesome but sadly only got one season ☹

But now I have four seasons of BS. I have been repeatedly warned that season 1 is shit and that there’s a rape scene but needs to be watched for backstory and then it gets awesome.
I have also seen just enough spoilery stuff on tumblr to know about Rupert Penry Jones’s character and his relationship, to know that I needed to watch this, if nothing else.
Have now seen up till 2.03, and am really enjoying it. I even like S1 but I did have my BFF regularly on hand to assure me that no, that guy there isn’t going to betray/rape/torture his woman, or that yes, I can invest in this character because they are not going to betray/torture anyone who doesn’t deserve it (much)

If not for any other reason, I would have watched it because It has a bunch of queer and/or POC main characters, wow.
But also, many, many ships, and I’m not talking about the ones that sail on the sea, though obviously there are also many of those. I have already done a kudos sort on AO3 to confirm that the main pairing is Flint/Silver, and I will happily read it (and already have, a couple of, not too spoilery, short fics) but right now I am totally there for the back story with Flint and his ex-lover that we are getting the story of in flashbacks. RUPERT PENRY JONES OMFG.
I will normally nope out of a show if there’s a rape scene, so it’s probably just as well that I didn’t try watching the show when it aired.
My friend assured me that the scene is short and that that the prostitute gets rescued, but what would have really got me through it was knowing this woman wasn’t just a disposable bit character, but that she goes on to be AMAZING.
Bunny’s away this weekend so that’s what me and the housemates will be doing – have finished all my gift fics, so have free time, yay!

On writing – I wrestled my Chocolate Box fic into submission and also wrote a couple of treats that I had fun with. Also wrote a longer fic for another small fandom exchange, and both of those have opened, yay.
For Chocolate Box I got TWO awesome Hogan’s Heroes fics, yay!!!
I have signed up for hetswap, but it’s only a small exchange, maybe 35 people, and while I love watching het pairings on TV, I rarely carry that investment over into reading/writing fic. So I only requested and volunteered to write in the same four fandoms... only to have no one share my enthusiasm. I got an email from the mods asking me to nominate another fandom I’d be willing to write in or they’d have to delete my sign up and I wasn’t going to bother since even if I match, someone will still have to write a pinch hit for my, but I looked through the prompts and found one I could do so I’ve nominated that one. *shrug* If I match, fine, if not, I’ll just write a treat or two if I feel up to the challenge. Still gobsmacked that no one else wanted Sense8 or Lucifer ☹

I definitely wasn't the one (or the only one) to nominate several fandoms/pairings I offered, but I realised close to the end that I might not be matchable in terms of having someone to write for either and added something. (I haven't had an email so it must have worked.)
It's a bit later, and it's het, and it clashes with about three other exchanges, so I suppose it's not a surprise. I'm glad you stayed in, I was feeling a bit bad about the whole thing!
(Immediate pinch hit is quite cool, though, if it happens! There are always loads more people watching for pinch hits than sign up for any given exchange. Personally, I'm not sure I'm matchable that end and am kind of hoping for it! (The only other time I was a pinch hit for Yuletide, I got a ridiculous no of treats that year. I'm sure it doesn't always work that way, but I'm not against trying it again to see. :-D)

What exchanges does it clash with - I did see the pregnancy one and the age gap one, and while I don't mind age gaps I figured there are probably even less fandoms I'd be able to write in than hetswap and didn't look any closer.

And I don't know - I think it's overlapping quite closely with Age Gap, Unusual Bearings, Smut Swap and Space Swap - the time tables vary but enough to put off a few waverers.

How great is Anne and Jack's relationship? So great! It evolves and evolves, too, and as far as I've seen (3.06), is still evolving.

Yep, i think it's safe to say I'm hooked on this show now :)

I love what they did with Jack and Anne and Max. You can always just look at the superficial pretty, like tumblr is wont to do, but there is so much more there in their complex relationship. (Okay, yes, I also had Neery there to guide me through s1 and tell me that Max will not die, because she was by far my fave character in s1.)
