I... did not like the pilot at all. I admit I do have an immediate bias against shows with yet another macho white guy in the lead role, and this guy was everything I dislike - aggressive, hard drinking, partying. Ugh. I was watching it with a friend and we kept going back of forth about whether we even wanted to see the episode out. The only thing that kept us going was Tim McKay pretty much playing an AU version of his character in White Collar - seriously, he's pretty much Peter Burke.

The end of the ep was intriguing and it looks like this is going to be about the character's redemption, so last night I showed the pilot to the household (with the 'he's a dick!' disclaimer, and I didn't mind it this time.

And then I liked the second episode a lot more - it's clearly going to be him and AU Peter Burke as Unlikely Crime Fighting Partners and how can I resist that??

I had the same initial reaction (ugh, another obnoxious douchebro!), but liked the twins and other characters, and the premise, enough to watch the ep 2, which I liked much more. About to curl up and watch ep 3.

Sadly, Fox has already moved it to the Friday night dead zone, which means it'll likely be cancelled. And I feel like an idiot for even giving another Fox sci-fi show a chance, because it always ends in tears.

Unless shows are ratings blockbusters, yes -- and sometimes, even if ratings are as good as other shows, the non-SFF shows get renewed and the SFF shows dumped. Fox only aired 11 eps of Firefly, then cancelled it; the remaining 3 eps weren't aired on Fox at all, but on Sci-Fi channel -- years later, right before Serenity came out in theaters.

And these days, it's not just Fox, but every US network (ABC has been on the top of my shit list for several years, now, because they're cancelled every single show I really liked except for Agent Carter). If the ratings are good, but the audience skews too old or too female -- cancelled. And if the network doesn't own and produce a show, unless it's a HUGE hit, it gets cancelled (like Fox did with Almost Human, which got really good ratings, but was owned by WB, so Fox felt they weren't making enough money off it to give it another season).

Second Chance was one of the only new shows I even bothered to take a look at this season, because I like the actors. And I'm getting another network kick up the arse for my trouble. Sigh.
