Yuletide fic beta'd and final version uploaded, yay! One treat finished, draft with beta. Second treat in progress, wheee. Still will end up with a word count less than half my usual Yuletide output, oh well. FUN WITH NEW FANDOM, WIN.
Also, I checked my Gift page and someone has written ME a Treat. I am very excited!!
I have many years of happily watching (and slashing) shows about white dudes, especially American shows, i have nothing against shows with white dudes, promise, but now that we have options with more diversity, I enjoy the hell out of watching them. So when Magicians started with a British POC dude and a British woman setting the scene i was super intrigued, only to discover they were talking about protecting 'the boy' and the scene promptly changed to... a white American dude in the US.
Which, okay, fine, another boy hero story.
Then he's at a party staring at a girl's ass - I'm assuming that's why the camera lingered for a close up of her twerking groin, anyway. This immediately put me off like whoa - I don't think there's ANY excuse for that sort of shot in a genre show nowadays.
Okay, so now I was admittedly feeling a bit negative, there some nice magicky bits, then one of the students at Sekrit Magic College refers to someone as a 'mind slut', which okay, adult show, i get it...
...and then the main girl (who is of course the boy hero's BFF and object of his secret love and he is resentful that she's never returned his secret regard), who was rejected by the school, is apparently headhunted by a rival/bad guy/whatever. This plays out with her in a bathroom (having apparently had her memory of magic erased) Smooth creepy guy in suit follows her in, uses magic to whip her blouse up so that her arms are bound by her blouse over her head, so she is posed in her bra and tight pants, then when she asks if he is going to rape her, he is all horrified and like 'oh, I wouldn't do something like that, I just wanted to get your attention'.
So what I'm getting from this is that it based on an adult fantasy novel, which is fair enough. But I'll let other people keep watching it and they can let me know later if I should give it another go. But Bunny won't be watching it.
*pathetically* Is it wrong that I like my magic shows to be Warehouse 13 rated content. Bring on more scenes of Myka and Pete sprawled on his bed as he shows her his comic book collection, i say.
