Having now seen the first seven episodes of Stargate Universe, I am LOVING it. Apart from episode 6, which was just your standard Stargate plot tweaked, the story so far is freaking EPIC.
D'Aww, their first alien planet. Oh, they are going to get so sunburnt. The guy with the gun in the background is Greer. I like to know where Greer is at all times because Greer is CREEEEPY. At first I thought he was creepy AND sociopathic and was afeared for the crew's safety, but I'm over that now. *looks behind self*

Meep.

Greer helps Colonel Young maintain order here. He seems to be loyal to Young, so that's a relief.

Young does inspirational speeches too. I like his command style.

And he's all polite and regretful when he flouts authority

Greer gets on well with Lt Scott too. So at least he's on the good guys' side. Depending on whether you regard them as the good guys of course. Ask some of the crew.

Oh, and here's Telford. He makes Greer seem SAFE. I'm not sure if I'm hoping he is actually unhinged. Because that would be LESS scary.

I can't identify this exact scene, but it's a safe bet that Scott is listening to Rush explain how they are all DOOMED. DOOMED HAHAA. Probably with an 'I told you so.' The guy in red is Eli. As you can tell, Eli is a geek. Rush likes to have Eli around because Eli asks slight fewer stupid questions than everyone else and very occasionally has an idea Rush doesn't completely hate.

Sort of like a protege, actually. A bit?

Eli hugging the girl he fancies. Look at the sunburn he acquired several episodes ago.

Eli also bonds with Scott occasionally. After all they're both young men suddenly thrust into positions of authority, and by authority I mean saving everyone's life a lot. Also, they both like the same girl. No doubt this is where SGU is getting it's "soapie" reputation.

Rush also will condescend to talk to Scott occasionally, if it serves his purpose. No one's sure what his purpose IS, mind.

Mmmm.

As I was saying Rush and Scott *cough* This is kinda how Rush sees their relationship. Scott, not so much.

Now, I've been hearing around the traps that some over-sensitive types think that Stargate is sexist. I can't think where they got that idea.

Seriously, there are not many photos of the women floating around that aren't photoshopped to with in an inch of their lives in the grand tradition of Stargate publicity shots everywhere. Luckily we can screencap. The blonde above is TJ. She's the medic, and 3IC when Young and Scott deem it necessary to both go to the planet at the same time. Not that they'd do that right, with them both being so critical to the survival of the crew. Because that would be stupid. I mean, unwise. No, stupid works.
Col Young - I am on this planet trying to acquire vital supplies to save the ship. Oh darn, Scott's fallen down a crevasse. How's the ship?
Rush - Laa lala everything's fine. You keep right on collecting that stuff we need.See you soon.
Eli - BUT THIS REALLY BAD THING HAPPENED.
Rush - *glares at Eli* But we're handling it, it's cool.
Eli - AND THIS OTHER REALLY BAD THING HAPPENED.
Rush *stare of death at Eli* Really, everything's all completely fine. Nothing to see here.
Col Young - Okedoke, I'll stay here and risk my life even though Scott's probably dead already. We probably have enough of that very important stuff already.
Rush - See you soon, thx bye!
Eli - You lied I can't believe it!!!!!
Rush -- Grownups do that sometimes.
Later...
Col Young - How's the situation?
TJ - We're still fine, Colonel, you stay there and keep trying to rescue Scott.
Col Young - Yays!!!
Eli - YOU ARE ALL LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE.
...you all got that was the cliche plot from episode 6, right?
*cough* Where was I? Oh, TJ. This is TJ being all firm and commanding. I like her. I'm actually looking forward to seeing if they're going to pretend her hair colour is natural or if they're going to let it grow out. They've raised my expectations with the ongoing sunburn.

This is TJ looking suspiciously at Rush. See, she's already got the hang of being in charge.

See?

Sometimes Rush does good though. OR DOES HE? *dun dun* Young gives Rush a celebratory pat...

...and Rush reacts in a veerrry interesting way.

Intriguing, even.

Mostly though, Young and Rush argue about who gets to make decisions about everyone's survival. Occasionally there are moments when they're in agreement. As Young says often, and in various tones of exasperation, "That man is a lotta, lotta work."

They're on a motherfucking ship!!

Date: 2009-11-10 06:48 pm (UTC)I saw the preview for this and found myself interested. Do you need to watch the other Stargate's to watch this one? Or can it stand on it's own?

Date: 2009-11-10 11:37 pm (UTC)Richard Dean Anderson plays Jack O'Neill from the movie (and the first series).
Also, wow, that is one big rock you've been under considering this franchise has been going for what, 15 years or so?

Date: 2009-11-10 11:42 pm (UTC)All I can say is, when we started watching I wasn't expecting anything good, and was in fact playing on my computer at the same time (I am BAD at multitasking media). Dragonfly got a bit fed up of me going, 'wait, what?' but by the end of 4 I was like, wow, this is intriguing and then 5 and 7 were AWESOME.
So I'd recommend giving it up until 7 (though you could probably skip 6 and not miss anything).
IMO.
