Swancon 2008 - Part the Somethingth

Sadly, Swancon has ended and I have eleven days to write a major essay for uni, while also going to Pancakes at Carillion tomorrow and the last FNL viewing on Friday, the slash gathering on Sunday, beta reading a fic and writing eleventy billion posts about how totally awesome Swancon was this year.
*stares back at list in abject terror*
In no particular order...
So, one of our guests was Rob Shearman who wrote the first season Dr Who ep, Dalek - the one that BROKE THE DOCTOR.
Just before the closing ceremony I saw Rob Shearman wandering about in the foyer and went over to him.
Me - Hi, I'm Sarren. I just wanted to thank you for stepping in at the last moment when Paul Cornell had to drop out. I watched
angriest's head explode when Paul had to cancel, it wasn't pretty, so thank you.
Rob - Hi Sarren. No, no it's been wonderful. It's very moving how welcoming you've all been. I really think Paul missed out. Oh, you've given me an idea, I've been trying to think of what to say at the ceremony.
Me - Cool, see you.
Rob - I'll talk to you later.
Me - No, no, that's fine, I just wanted to say thank you. *wanders off*
Later, perched on a barstool in the entrance way waiting for
mr_booboo come back, Rob Shearman walked into the hotel and came over and said 'Hi Sarren' and we talked for a bit about travel, and family and cats and then the conversation turned, as is natural, to Dr Who.
Me - That scene in Dalek when the Doctor is shouting at the dalek is probably the most intense scene ever in Dr Who. It's very gripping.
Rob - Oh thanks, it was really due to Chris's delivery.
Random fanboy *appears* - Chris Eccleston is really crap.
Rob *courteously* I'm sorry you feel that way.
Me *embarrassed* I think it's awesome the way Chris Eccleston made the character his own and went in a unique direction.
Rob - Yes, he's an amazingly talented man.
Fanboy - No really, he's a bad actor and a bad Doctor.
Me *hurriedly* It's really interesting the way the Doctor is becoming more alien. I can't really empathise with him anymore but it's really interesting to watch.
Then we chatted for a bit about how fabulous David Tennant is and the direction the show is taking - which I'm not going to talk about because I'm a big tease, so there.
Then, because Rob had mentioned in a panel that Steven Moffat, who's a mate of his, had been insecure about whether people would like The Empty Child, I said that the gas mask monsters were the scariest ever until Blink aired and then Rob started telling me a story about how Steven threatens to put The Empty Child on to get his children to go to bed in the middle of which I noticed over his shoulder
mr_booboo waving frantically at me with a cranky look on her face.
Me *leaps up* Gotta go, I'm being yelled at, bye!
Rob - Oh, okay, bye.
Me *rushes out to the car*
Me OMG you made me run out on Rob Shearman!!!
mr_booboo I know! Sucks to be you! Go get your car right now and follow me.
Me *starts to run towards car*
Me *stops and angsts*
Me *runs back to where I abandoned Rob to dickhead fanboy*
Me - Sorry! I cut you off mid-sentence! Sorry!
Rob - No, no, that's absolutely fine.
Me - Okay, please tell Steven I loved The Empty Child and Blink.
Rob - I will.
Me - Bye! *runs away*
*headdesk*

Date: 2008-03-26 03:33 pm (UTC)It would be so awesome! It was just so unexpected and lovely that he was so affable and conversational and easy to get along with - great company! I'm sticking with the word adorable as well.
We had several interesting discussions about fanfic, and also he really appreciated when I moved stuff in the awards ceremony around a bit so that he could participate - he felt so drawn in as part of our community that I'm still a little warm and fuzzy from it.
Go you for all the cool stuff you did and work you put in - I've heard good things even though I am a bad friend and didn't get to go to either of your panels. *loves*
