The second question is hard: What if you never look at individual friends' pages and always view your own friends' list, which is automatically in your own format?
Okay, now I'm confused again. We look at our flists in our own layout, but then if you click on lj cuts, it goes to their lj. Doesn't the function you were talking about mean that it overrides to your layout?
I tend to get around that by clicking on the 'comment' link, which also includes the override. ... I may not want to comment, but it's much quicker than typing the "?style=mine" onto the URL explicitly.
