Sarren's First Medical Show Fandom
Oct. 2nd, 2016 12:57 amI've never been into medical shows, mainly because of my complete lack of interest in anything, well, medical, but I randomly acquired this show, so I figured I'd give it a go, and wow this show is intense - it's an emotional roller coaster!
Code Black is set in an underresourced ER, based on this documentary, and it is FULL ON - they save people but they also lose people and of course it's also about the characters bonding and supporting each other. Between the patients dying and the personal tragedies I tear up almost every episode.

But first, THIS PROMO THO - not a white dude in sight, WOW.

Jesse & Leanne are just so adorable and protective of each other and their ER family. *so much love* I am amazed and disappointed this wasn't nominated for Yuletide, I figured it was a sure thing so I didn't bother to, was seriously considering requesting Leanne & Jesse found family fic.

Shout out to Leanne and Neal bonding.

And of course I ship Christa/Neal, because they are cute as buttons, and clearly destined to be canon. Also, not gonna lie, Neal's gorgeous British accent really does it for me :)

...I'm going to assume that's the actors messing about *g*

And of course, the slash pairing, Mario/Angus. Started out with the antagonistic relationship, Mario's from a poor background, was neglected, has fought to get where he is and resents Angus's silver spoon, but of course Angus has his own issues and gradually they learn to trust and rely on each other and become friends.

N'aw, the actors. Cute.

And then there is Malaya. Who's great!

After episode 2 I checked out AO3 to see what the fandom ships are, and was surprised about the complete lack of Malaya, especially considering the variety of pairings being written. Then in ep 4, she was picked up by a blonde woman who has referred to as her girlfriend, although we haven't met her.
And then a few eps later we met her ex-girlfriend, Carla, who used to be a doctor there, so is friends with a lot of the staff, and has come in for scans because she has cancer but refuses chemo because she's pregnant. So yes, we have another tragic lesbian storyline, which sucks, but Carla isn't the love interest being fridged, she's her own character with agency and choices, so

Disclaimer - am only 2/3 through the season, but am fairly confident I will still be reccing it when I've finished, unless Leanne turns out to be a serial killer or something :)

Date: 2016-10-01 05:28 pm (UTC)If you find you've gotten a taste for med shows, I highly recommend The Night Shift. Some selling points: lots of diversity, nuanced plots and v. well-written characters who act like adults (OMG, so refreshing), canon m/m relationship, some fav. actors (Eoin Macken and Brendan Fehr). Another point of interest is that some of the docs are combat vets, including Jennifer Beals, who shows up in a recurring role.
By contrast, I'm watching Grey's for a fav. Kiwi actor and it's just fucking atrocious. Good grief.
