Last to see Star Wars
Jan. 15th, 2016 09:32 pmThe only thing I knew about Star Wars going in was that there was a female lead character and an adorable slash pairing. I was very much looking forward to both.
Rey didn’t disappoint, but I have to admit I was expecting more scenes of Finn and Poe together, considering they seem to be the new slash power couple in fandom.
In fact, I was pretty well engaged by the adorable Rey/Finn relationship – are we supposed to ship them? I noticed a number of references on fan sites to Rey being a lesbian - is there any actual canon to support this or is it fanon created by slashers who don’t want the epic devotion Finn and Rey showed to get in the way of their new shiny pairing. Hey, not judging, I will happily read both pairings!
Just not Rey/Ren, apart from the fact they are likely to turn out to be cousins, that pairing is just wrong considering their entire interaction was him torturing her. Apparently it’s a thing though? When I sorted TFA fic by kudos just out of curiosity after I saw the film, the whole first page were Finn/Poe, except the top one which I clicked on just to see what the fuss about (the word count was 12 words) it was just one sentence dragging the pairing, with a very amusing wankfest in the comments, which seemed to consist of people being outraged that their pairing was being dissed and stating that they had reported the “abuse” to AO3 (wow) and other people being amused at their outrage.
Things I liked about TFA
- It was entertaining
- Rey was wonderful
- Finn is ADORABLE OMG
- Poe is also cute and the pairing is adorable
- The humour! No one told me the film was funny! So many fun scenes
- The two random people with broad Scottish accents
- Han offering Rey a place in his crew, N’Awww.
- Chewbacca and Han still inseparable after all these years
- HUX! I was very impressed with the red haired general, you can’t doubt his professionalism or his devotion to the cause. That speech he gave to his troops was very inspiring.
Things I didn’t like about TFA
- Kylo Ren. Really, they’re doing that AGAIN? The misunderstood emo white boy turning to the dark side? Did they learn nothing from the shitty prequels? NO ONE CARES.
Randomly
- I know it’s sacrilege, but as much as I loved seeing Han Solo again, I didn’t really believe in him still being a kickass smuggler, it was painfully obvious when Harrison Ford did anything actiony that he is in fact a 73 year old man *sigh*
- Also it was fun seeing British actors that are well known enough that *I* know their names playing bit parts, because hell yeah, who wouldn’t want to be in Star Wars, apparently also Daniel Craig was the stormtrooper who was like ‘Aaannnd I will drop my gun’. And Simon Pegg was the trader Rey was dealing with. I didn’t spot either of them, but I did like Harriet Walter as the doctor who told Chewie he was very brave and Emun Elliot as some random rebel dude around the table. Oh, ha, a list of cameos here.
- What is with the thing that looked like a cross between Gollum and an orc, that I have, oh ha, just discovered is played by Andy Serkis. I’m just going to assume it’s a hologram of a dude with major size issues. He’s going to turn out to be Yoda size IRL, right?
