Jody likes to show me English historical type detective shows when Dragonfly goes away and this week it's Inspector George Gently, which is set in 1964 and stars Martin Shaw.

I am really enjoying the relationship between DCI Gently and his DS John Bacchus. Gently is straight down the line and bitter about all the corruption amongst senior officers he's seen. He works with Bacchus in the first ep and John is flashy and happy to lie in court to put away criminals and beat em up a bit, and Gently determines to keep him as his DS to keep him in line so he doesn't end up corrupt.

Their relationship is really snarky, and John bitches and moans and at one point Gently says to him, 'you are a very strange young man' and there's an amusing scene at the end of an ep John invites himself fishing with Gently and then is just like 'can we go to cafe and have egg and chips - I have water in my boots - I'm not happy - this is rubbish'

The pilot ep involves a young man who's murdered for being gay, and his boyfriend is played by a debonair Richard Armitage. During the case John makes some bigoted comments and then he and Gently have a conversation about homosexuality while having tea in a hotel, with Gently talking about how it's going to be decriminalised soon and John's still being negative and Gently says maybe electrotherapy would help and John's like 'no, they're almost all still queer at the end of it and Gently's like 'I meant for YOU'. Then, the waiter, who has only overheard enough to get completely the wrong impression asks if they will be putting the bill on the same hotel room and John is like, WHAT NO, I'm NOT...' while Gently laughs and laughs and laughs.

I watched the entire first season tonight - all three 90 minute episodes. Being 1964 the other two eps' plots were IRA and the murder of an ex German POW who'd come back to where he'd been interned during the war.
