I can't work out how to sort the laptop, so I'm going to have to take it to an 'authorised reseller'. I have a list off the Toshiba page and they all look very daunting. Do I just randomly pick one?

Also, I can find every piece of paper, manual and item every relating to my laptop, including the $25 Myers voucher, but I can't find my proof of purchase receipt. Yet again I fail at being a responsible adult. *is sad*

Also, I'm assuming this password isn't for the hard drive, because otherwise apparently I have a very expensive paperweight. And then I would have to cry.

Seriously, bring it over and let Paul have a look at it.

Also, you can use your credit card statement towards proof of purchase.

Also, I'm pretty sure I have my receipt. Same laptop on the same day...

What's the exact error? Are you getting into Windows at all, or are you getting something that say, like, HD password= when you try and boot?

Of course you do. Because you are responsible. Unlike some people. (me)

Lucky Paul. I feel awfully like I'm imposing :(

But I will. *headdesk* When would you like me to drop it off? Oh, or you could just take it away with you Sunday.

Quotes from email - "I'll have to dig around in K's manual to work out how to reset it."

That's an offer to help directly from the boy's own fingers.

We're both at my place tonight if you want to drop it off after work, otherwise I'll bring it home with me on Sunday.

I was getting at the same thing (http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_dtlViewDL.jsp?soid=960695&moid=256528&BV_SessionID=@@@@0274351957.1153463361@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccjaddigfkklelcgfkceghdgngdgmn.0&ct=DL), actually. Unfortunately, it looks like it indicates HD problems more than something that can be easily fixed.

(Guess who's had trouble with Toshibas before -- raise your hand if you think that it's me. Oh hey, you're right! It totally was me. Possibly I have some bitterness.)

Toshiba?!

How come you don't have a MacBook? *shakes head. sighs*

I assume you've tried putting a password in? I would start with your most commonly used password for other things (if you have one), as that's likely what you used when you first got the computer and were setting it up.

Try it and see if it works.

Just a thought.

You don't need a receipt. You have your credit card summary which is sufficient proof.

Have you tried random passwords that you'd use? Didn't you name it something?

Don't even ask. *I* told her to buy the MacBook because she'd be more familiar with it - and it's better, but no. The Toshiba was shiny and pretty.

After saying that, I love my Samsung (now that it's all reformated and working again).

Did the password box just appear?

That happened with my last laptop (piece 'o shite Compaq) and I just hit enter and it let me right in (I did not type in anything).

No, no, the Macbook was shiny and pretty and ON DISPLAY but Cricket wouldn't let me stop and ogle it *g*

I bought a pc because I've only used a mac for eva and I thought I should be able to find my way around a pc too, in case I need to use one in my (hypothetical) new job. When I get one.

And yes, of course I've tried passwords. i wouldn't have created one at all, unless it forced me to (I don't have one on the imac) I have tried everything I can think of.

I named my computer McKay. So I even tried Sheppard as the password, because, OBVIOUSLY. But sadly, no.

First thing I tried - I don't have a password on my iMac at all, so I'm used to doing that.

Nice thought though :)

No problem - we've got our first session with D&J's personal trainer this evening, so I imagine we'll be having a quite late / light dinner.

And then I'm going to tell him that I've beaten a bunch of his top scores on Guitar Hero II, so I imagine we shall be harassing each other mercilessly about guitar playing style until reasonably late.

It was on display NOT IN THE COMPUTER SECTION. And I wouldn't let you stop and ogle it after you'd already purchased something else because that way lies deep and abiding PAIN.

It's actually for D&J - J's family have been harrassing him rather mercilessly about the state of his health. D is joining in 'cos she wants to support him (and has just done the numbers and turned up 'obese' on the BMI and is horrified.
