I have to say, fandom is getting very good at getting on top of wanks and providing handy summary posts complete with links.

On how the Warnings debate blew up

And also, wasn't expecting to feel so personally disappointed in writers whose fic I've previously enjoyed. To quote one commenter Stop being dicks people I like and respect!

- Can no longer justify every waking second spent obsessing about Star Trek, Sweet Charity deadline LOOMING.
- Re-emergence of other interests and necessity of allocating limited time means that fics that don't catch my interest in the first page get abandoned. Too much to get through.
- Enough time has passed that clear tropes have emerged. I don't care how well written the fic is, the first time the author refers to Kirk as a slut or a manwhore or any variation thereof, I am GONE. Also, I don't even DARE open a fic that has McCoy's ex-wife in it. There was one fic where even the TITLE was offensive, something like Five Times Kirk Wanted to Choke a Bitch and One Time the Bitch got Served.
- Sorry, I'm just not that into Kirk/McCoy, so I'm now being way picky. Having said that, the amount of K/Mc fics being put out is HUGE - my latest batch of recs I'm accumulating is about half K/Mc fics so far.

Even the ones that aren't offensive about her, um. Some of the comments really are.

Fic: They don't get along, because hello messy divorce. Neither is evil but they are confrontational.

Comments: LOL I LOVE HOW YOU MADE HER AN EVIL SHREW!

*headdesk* I know!!!

I was never a McCoy fan growing up, my perception of him is no doubt just as prejudiced as all of these fans demonising his ex-wife, which is the only reason I've refrained from a long ranty post about this *g*

Mind you, fandom has a long history of being horrible to female characters who have some kind of personal relationship to the male characters they're fixating on. Look at all the shit Uhura's been getting for being unprofessional and leaving her post, while no-one even notices that Kirk, Spock and McCoy all did the same thing.

You said it.

I actually think er. *Knowing* these tendencies, Uhura has done astonishingly well, given that she got in the middle of the fannish OTP to end all OTPs.

Which is not to say this behavior is not wrong. But I'm glad it isn't worse! I actually think ficcing fandom has (on average) gotten better about this over the twelve years I've been around here.

She isn't getting a *tenth* of the hate I've seen aimed Sam Carter or Elizabeth Weir. And I say this as a slasher who never shipped them with anyone! Given the *huge* cultural weight behind K/S, I'm really glad at how many slash and het fans are pro-Uhura.

On McCoy's ex, I don't have a problem with them having a messy divorce (heavily implied canon!) or really disliking each other now (pretty common in messy divorces!), but making her a cartoon villain is ridiculous and messed up.

Making screen captures of LJ posts so they can post them on web sites if the author removes or hides them?! Amazing. There are some folks with a serious lack of something worthwhile to do with their lives.

Worthwhile? Really? Because all of the other things we do with our lives, like blogging, reading and writing fanfic, and oh, gaming, for example are more worthwhile?

I reckon people who take the trouble to hold people to account for their actions are doing the fandom community a favour. If people know that the things they post can't be just vanished away whenever they feel like it, perhaps they will take a moment to decide whether that hurtful thing they are saying is really worth it.

Yes, really. I'd consider all the things you listed, even the ones I have no interest in, more worthwhile than spending one's time making screencaps of blog posts in case someone decides to remove them. Do these people who are doing screencaps of everything also walk around constantly with voice recorders in case anyone says anything they want to bring up later?

"Hold people to account for their actions"? Their "actions" are just comments in a blog. Posting a blog is like having a physical diary and showing it to people. You can shut it (or part of it) any time you like. And, you know, sometimes it's better that way.

Obviously haven't been paying attention to fandom lately because my first thought was "warnings? wha -? I thought it was negative feedback that we were wanking about this month".

Obviously, I have been failing as a fandom citizen.

On another note: seriously, warnings = rape || warnings =/= rape? I am slightly confused and more than a little perturbed.

Sorry, been programming non-stop for the past few weeks. Forgot that normal people don't talk in symbols!

That last sentence should read, "the warnings are like rape OR are the warnings not like rape?".
