Dragonfly got me first season M*A*S*H for my birthday. Did they mellow the characters over the years, or something? I'd hate to think that I used to think the Hawkeye from the first ep was actually funny. He's really unpleasant, and sexist, and downright mean to Hot Lips.

We just watched an episode where Hawkeye and Trapper set some guy up to believe that Houlihan wants him and is waiting for him. There ensues a protracted scene where they stand outside smirking while Houlihan screams with terror, struggling to fight off her attacker.

I do remember never being too impressed with Trapper's constant cheating on his wife. Yay for BJ!

I'm pretty sure they did mellow over time. Although being mean to Hot Lips was a staple, and it's as sexist as the time it came from (ie. very).

Yeah, I know *sigh* Glad I wasn't born then. Some of my favourite scenes are when they treat Houlihan with respect, and when she is being great.

I may well be wrong*, but I think the early Hawkeye and co were (unfortunately) a more accurate portrayal of the characters in the original novels. Perhaps the zeitgeist of the seventies/eighties seeped into the show, or maybe it was a deliberate move to make the show more appealing?

But that's exactly why (unlike the vast majority of that fandom) I could totally see Hawkeye/Trapper, but NOT Hawkeye/BJ. BJ clearly *adored* Peg, and I can just never get past that.
