Li - Lithium. Really light metal. Floats on water which it reacts with. Lithium in water.

Na - Sodium. Turns white when exposed to air. Explodes in flaming balls when exposed water. It's so cute how excited they are.

K - Potassium. Covered with oxide coating, turns black when exposed to air. If exposed to water explodes in red and purple flaming balls. Potassium in water.

Sodium burns with an orange flame, Lithium red and Potassium lilac which makes them very easy to tell apart.

This is a great idea. Couldn't agree more that you need to learn this. I didn't, and I got a D in Chemistry when I was 15 & in year 11. I sat up the back of the class and read Anne McCaffrey, because I figured, since I wasn't really getting it, at least I'd read science fiction. At this rate, I'm going to learn the periodic table too!

When you do read Levi's The Periodic Table, see what happens when - since "potassium is sodium's twin" - he uses potassium when he should have used sodium. The story is "Potassium", and it has a lovely ending.

Oh, and in my opinion chemistry is much easier than both physics and maths. You might find you quite like it!

Shortly I start an intensive one month "Winter" unit to get my intro business unit out the way and then in 2nd semester I'm doing the intro chemistry and Intro to Sustainable Development (http://online.murdoch.edu.au/public/STP108/). Apparently I'm doing a double major.

I dropped it at the end of first semester year 11. BOY was THAT a hassle. I think we (being my mother and I) provided a precedent at the school for it. (Changing subjects at that time.) I went into history and did an entire year of course work in one semester, and got 3% points away from a B. Think I made the right move, especially since I just graduated with a degree in History ;)

Sure, now we're grown ups we can see how silly it is. At the time though? I think it saved my sanity.

I wasn't doing well in maths either... *dodgy look* No reading though during that class. Just not enough time actually given to the subject. (33% in my first test in year 12.)

Hee. I paid no attention at all to school from years 8-10. In retrospect, my Dad left us the Christmas before I started year 8 and we had to move and I guess that probably had an impact on me - plus, you know, I was LAZY. Then I had to get serious in year 11 to get into uni....where I was LAZY and dropped out. *g*

I've been twice. Got two BA's at this point. I'll considering further study in a few years. I love going to uni and learning more, and hey, unlike just reading, you get a piece of paper saying you've achieved something official in a few years. (My first was the 3 years after school, when I got a BA in Media Studies (Film), and the last few years, where I graduated earlier this year with a BA in Modern History.)

I think I'll try and do an honours in the History, or Masters. I like it a lot. If I don't, I might end up doing some sort of certificate in Costume.

Meh. I was the kind of girl who just daydreamed out the window. Did all the work in class, and nothing really afterwards. Year 10 was good for me. And then I had a maths & english tutor in year 12, and did OK (got an A in English Lit in the final semester of year 12, which was totally awesome, but Maths - shit, I'd have probably failed if I didn't have the tutor, and probably should have just bloody done the lower maths). Then again, I didn't get into the university that I wanted to go to anyway. Meh - I'm having more fun now :D
