Photo by Mark Bickerdike taken immediately after shark attack at Middleton Beach. The picture shows Joanne Lucas helping victim Jason Cull to shore (two heads in foreground) while Jason's two friends swim to shore (the two heads further out) kicking the water to scare the shark off. It's fin can be seen close behind. Mark took the photo believing it was just a dolphin.

I heard interviews with the victim and rescuer on the way to work this morning.

Jason - I felt myself being dragged backwards so I felt along the snout until I felt the eye and poked it until the shark let go, and then I kept looking underwater to see if it was coming back, just ducking up for air.

Joanne - Someone said 'that guy needs help, he's been attacked by a shark'. I said no, that's a dolphin' and they said 'no he said he was attacked by a shark'. There was no one really else around to rescue him so I took off my clothes and swam out. I could see the fin the whole time. There were two other swimmers kicking and splashing to keep it at bay.

Yikes! What's up with sharks getting super-aggressive lately? We've had something like 3 fatal shark attacks in the past several weeks here. Maybe they've finally had it with us fucking up the environment, or something?

I like the part where now there are dolphins patrolling the coastline - so maybe the dolphins are still on our side. Or maybe they don't care cos they have a way off the planet.
