I just finished a book set in London and a character in it asked if some particular flats were 'portered'. (Set in the late 80s/early 90s, and written by Julian Clary. 'Murder Most Fab', and I thoroughly enjoyed it.)
Feel free! Probably say 10 kay instead of 7 miles. 5k gets used too. But it depends how far, as well. If you were running 10+ miles, you would say miles because it sounds more hardcore! Half-marathon gets said as well. If it was a very short distance, you'd probably say a couple of miles. I think that covers all the very vague bases :-D I imagine anyone under 25 is surely using all kilometres these days.

It occurred to me that I should make an important caveat - road signs and car speedometers; driving distances generally, are all miles :)
