Me Yes hello I want to switch to broadband.
CS- Which package would you like?
Me Well I surf the net A LOT but I don’t download shows, or music or anything.
CS The starter pack will be fine then, you get 2GB peak + 2 GB offpeak.
ME Yep, I won’t use half that.
CS *mutters something*
Me What?

*frantic call to ISP*

Me WE’VE GONE OVER! OMG HOW MUCH AM I BEING CHARGED AND IT’S ONLY THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH.
CS Breathe. You’re not being charged, you’re connection is just really slow.
Me I need to upgrade RIGHT THIS SECOND.

Me When people sign up with starter packs you guys must just LAUGH and LAUGH.
CS *giggles*

No, because the petrol gauge is RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY EYES. Also, I DIDN'T KNOW that my housemate was downloading so much.

I probably could upgrade at the website if hadn't of been PANICKING.

Why doesn't it count on the last billing day?

I realised after I posted that I was a little ambiguous: When I said "you", I meant it in the plural, not to just yourself. Indeed, I meant it in reference to whoever is doing the downloading.

Some people do download the equivalent of a gauge. Others of us just check our ISP's web site occasionally.

I'm not aware of any ISP's doing shaping by the minute. Probably once a day your ISP's billing computer adds up your usage for the month to date and, if it's over the limit, marks you for reduced speed. If I run over my limit at any time of day, shaping will happen on my line at sometime early the following morning, giving me as much as a full day of full speed while I'm actually over the limit. If I go over on the last day of the month, it's already the new month by the time the calculation takes place.
